Types of Tillers

Cultivators
Many people refer to cultivators as tillers, but they are a distinct category from the hardier garden tillers that are also available. Cultivators are relatively lightweight and affordable tools that are good for stirring soil. Unlike larger, more powerful garden tillers, they aren't as useful for breaking new ground, but if your garden is already established, they can still make a lot of the labor of taking care of it easier.

Garden tillers
Garden tillers are larger machines that bring enough power to break ground, as well as being useful for soil stirring and plowing. These tillers are gas powered and come in a range of sizes, power levels, and costs. There are three different categories of garden tillers, defined by where the tines are placed and how they work.

Front-tine tillers
With front-tine tillers, two tines are located under the engine in front of the tiller's wheels. They're more powerful than cultivators, but less powerful than other types of garden tillers. Their design makes them easy to maneuver, so they can be especially useful in gardens with narrow rows.

Rear-tine tillers

These machines have tines that cut forward through the soil, rather than downward like front and rear-tine models do. That makes them faster and easier to use. They work well both for breaking ground on new gardens and plowing and stirring soil on new ones.

Components of Tillers
Motor
The engine is the heart of the tiller, it provides the power and drives the machine to work. The engine includes parts such as cylinder heads, valves, gasoline tanks, oil dipsticks, crankshafts, etc.
Slash and brush department
The slash and tillage unit is the core part of the tillage machine that performs the tillage operation, and it uses a rotating steel knife to plow the land. The slashing department includes parts such as cutterheads, knives, knives, clutches, etc.
Gearbox
The gearbox is an important part of the micro-tiller, which controls the speed at which the machine moves forward and backward. The gearbox includes gears, gear shafts, structural shells, clutches and other parts.
Transmission shaft
The propeller shaft is the power transmission component of the tiller, which connects the gearbox and the slashing section. The transmission shaft includes universal joints, hangers, shaft sleeves and other parts.
Walking section

Have a clean air filter in place.
The air filter has the important job of preventing dirt, dust and other debris from entering the carburetor and engine. It should be cleaned or changed every 25 hours of engine use or once per mowing season. Pleated, paper air filters must be replaced. Foam air filters can be cleaned with hot water and a small amount of detergent and then left to air dry before being saturated with new engine oil and reinstalled.
Use a clean fuel filter.
There is high risk of damage to fuel filters if cleaned so replacement is recommended.
Degrease.
Spray a degreaser on oil stains. Allow the degreaser to sit for 10-15 minutes before wiping with a clean cloth. Rinse with a hose and dry completely.
Use fuel stabilizer in winter.
Tillers require clean, fresh fuel for best performance from the engine. During the off season when your tiller is being stored, the fuel should either be drained or a fuel stabilizer should be added to prevent clogs in the carburetor.
Clean and lubricate the tines.
Clean the tines after each use with hose and then spray them with a lubricant to protect them from rusting.
Tires.
Check the tires for wear and if they are worn or damaged, replace them. Check the air pressure on inflatable tires periodically with a tire gauge to make sure they are at the correct inflation pressure as stamped on the sidewall of the tire. Fill with air when necessary.
What to Consider When Purchasing a Tiller




Soil Type
Where you live specifies the type of soil you'll be working with, significantly affecting what kind of rototiller you'll need. If the ground is harder and contains clay and rocks, you'll need a tiller that won't be damaged when tilling through the more demanding job. A less powerful tiller can be used with generally soft and loose soil.
Use
Once you know your soil type, you can combine that information with what you plan to use the tiller for. If you're looking into tillers for home use and only need to break ground once, you may be able to rent a rear-tine tiller for that and get by with purchasing a less expensive front- or mid-tine model for ongoing use. For commercial tilling purposes, choosing a more powerful tiller can get jobs done quicker and easier.
Garden Size
The land size you plan to till must also be considered when buying. Smaller jobs won't require the power and scope that large rear-tine tillers offer. Many backyard gardens will only need a smaller tiller or cultivator.
Power Source
Larger tillers are usually gas-powered, while smaller tillers and cultivators, sometimes called mini tillers, are often electric. Electric garden tillers come in both battery-powered cordless and corded options. Electric tillers are typically more affordable but less powerful.
Cost
Decide what you'll be using your rototiller for and how often you'll be using it. Is it something you need or want to invest money into? If the answer is no, you may get away with purchasing a less expensive option. Tillers come in a wide variety of price points depending on things such as brand, size, and features.
Precautions for Using a Tillers
Remove rocks and debris
Before using a garden tiller, you should remove rocks and other forms of debris from the soil. Garden tillers are only designed for use with soil. They can break up compacted soil, but garden tillers can't break up rocks, branches and other forms of debris -- at least not safely. Running a garden tiller over rocks could result in damage to the tiller or bodily injury, neither of which is good.
Check for underground utilities
In addition to removing rocks and debris, you should check for underground utilitrnies before using a garden tiller. Many utility companies run their lines underground. There could be gas, water or power lines running underground. If you accidentally strike them with a garden tiller, you could sustain a serious injury. And at the very least, you'll lose the respective utility until the line has been repaired.
Wear hearing protection
You should wear hearing protection when using a garden tiller. Assuming you have a gas-powered garden tiller, it will probably be noisy during use. Exposure to loud noise can cause hearing loss. According to the u.S. Centers for disease control and prevention (CDC), 12% of workers have trouble hearing. To protect against hearing loss, you need to wear hearing protection when using a garden tiller.
Don't leave running unattended
Never leave a garden tiller running unattended. Garden tillers are powerful machines. While they typically require manual operation to engage the blade, you still shouldn't leave them running unattended. Instead, shut down the garden tiller until you return.
Start with a slow till speed
It's a good idea to start with a slow till speed. Most garden tillers offer multiple till speed settings. The till speed, of course, is the speed at which the blade spins. To lower your risk of injury, start with a slow till speed. If it's not enough to cut through the compacted soil, gradually raise it to a faster till speed.
